Native American cultureThis is about as Native American as my left nostril.
What it is, however, is a perfect example of the objectification and sexualisation of Native women. This picture is a slap in the face of a harsh reality that sees every third Native woman raped during her life time and quite in stark contrast to white rape - which is terrible as well - 80% of the women raped are raped by non-native perpetrators from outside their families and communities, who often can’t be taken to court because they’re not living on tribal lands and the tribal police thus finds itself without any power to do anything.
But this picture is not only a mockery of a very real Native American problem, i.e. rape, but also a terrible example of how Native cultures have been exotified and turned into romantic Others that, because of their status as something belonging to the past in the Western mind, can be exploited and turned into a terrible misrepresentation of native cultures.
Furthermore, this picture manages to ignore the highly spiritual importance of the feather bonnet; women did not wear feather bonnets and certainly not while assuming a pose that presents them as stoic, yet sexual objects.
